A Tale of 2 Cities - Romania May 2005

This is a summary report by John Grant of the Luis Palau Association Europe, of the mission to Romania where Alan Heavey was the evangelist in Galati and Iasi during May of 2005.
Galati
This mission was requested by the city
Pastors following the 2003 Christmas outreach by
Alan Heavey.
One condition of return was that the churches
guaranteed the follow up – this was undertaken to good effect and new converts have already started attending the churches, discipleship courses are underway.
It is estimated that out of the 2098 people
attending the various affinity events, 1300 were not
believers, and a 34% percentage of these indicated a decision to accept Jesus Christ as personal Saviour.
Alan reported a distinct increase in the sincerity of
the recipients over the interest expressed at the
Christmas mission, and concluded that ‘Galati’ was a
huge success, the churches were built up and had acquired increased faith, the Pastors were excited – TREMENDOUS !
Alan was amazed at the Prison event.
A genuine request has been made that we return annually to repeat the mission.  Good financial stewardship was again a feature of this Action Group as well as great organisation and vision.
In an event in a neighbouring town named Focsani, the friend of the event co-ordinator made a decision for Christ. At the Youth event, an unbeliever brought his unsaved friend, who made a positive response to the invitation to have his sins forgiven and receive eternal life……….many more personal stories like this abound, perhaps a special one was the testimony of a family who had all come to Christ since the son had received Jesus at the Children’s event of the 2003 Christmas mission.
Iasi
Here in the ‘heartland of Orthodoxy’ was the most amazing result, glory to God who responded to the prayer and fasting of these wonderful believers in Iasi…….the planning started very late and the mission should have been unsuccessful by human standards.
The Lord honoured the hard work, faith and unity of the team.
It is estimated that of the 2271 people attending, 1638 were non believers and 38% of these indicated their decision to accept Christ for the first time………a staggering 784 said they would like to attend a Next Steps event, whilst 326 were wanting more information about a relationship with Christ.
In faith, the Action Team emulated every event in the ‘Next Steps’ programme the week following the Mission events, leading respondents into discipleship small groups with a view towards ultimate entry into the churches.
In this garden area of the ‘Little Texas Hotel’, owned by USA missionary / businessman Jerry Little, 93 people embraced the Saviour.
Doctors, civic leaders heard the Gospel of the God who miraculously removed the rain that had been causing flood havoc right across Romania for a fortnight before these events.
Many others made commitments in the restaurant area………the 8 year old prayer of Jerry was answered by the Lord !
An impromptu event was organised for the hotel staff and six of the twenty six attending, said yes to Jesus.
In the downtown Hotel Moldova restaurant, under the shadow of the former Romanian Royal Palace, a phenomenal response was witnessed amongst the Roma (Gypsy ) people, 88 of them surrendering their lives to Christ.  The co-ordinator, Pastor Lacatus, who raised 50% of the funds for this event has earnestly asked Alan to return to do a specialist Gypsy mission on a wider basis.
An eminent poet present at the event for Seniors, who had been jailed for 20 years because he had declared his intellectual belief that God would one day overthrow communism, placed his personal belief in Christ, stating that he had waited for three decades to hear the gospel explained so that he could understand it, and that day had come at the Senior’s Coffee..
What a joy it was to have John Fosbery become part of the Mission for the last three days, and God rewarded the wonderful servant heart of John by drawing many boys and girls, teenagers and adults into the kingdom as he lifted up the Saviour before them.
Pray for the planning of an evangelistic outreach with John to the Jews of Romania and the Republic of Moldova later this year.
Common comment regarding all the events was, “this is amazing – we have never done anything like this before, the churches are so excited and encouraged !”
